How I fell in love with house music

september 6, 2017 | by: mercedes | filed under: videos, spirituality, musique du jour

I have wanted to share my music narrative with you for literally years – since the inception of this blog and my YouTube channel. I hope you come away with a deeper understanding of why I named this endeavor L’Amour et la Musique, and I would love to hear any of your thoughts and musings on music’s place in your life, house music/culture, or how you experience vibrational bliss. You can watch this video here. xoxo, mercedes.

February Favorites and why do I have such a hard time posting regularly here

march 5, 2017 | by: mercedes | filed under: videos, musique du jour

Lately I’ve been in that mode of feeling paralyzed by the amount of things I both need and want to do with L’amour. And I’m not getting a ton accomplished. I had this pipe dream of a M-F blog post on here, that hasn’t happened. My latest goal is to archive all my videos on here somehow so that products I’ve reviewed in video can be searchable here, since I can’t always remember where to direct people to. And then there’s the whole backlog of videos I desperately want to film but just do.not.have.the.time. Two nights of French class a week the past few months has cut into L’amour time, so once that wraps maybe things will ease back up. I just basically resent having to have a “real” job! Or perhaps I just need to hire someone to do some of these cataloguing/archiving things for me? Is that what people do, hire people?

Learning as I go, I suppose. But here’s the video I posted today with the complete product list, for your searching pleasure! And, I’m going to be putting up a quick post in the next few days on three different beauty subscription boxes I just tested and wanted to do a video but yeah that’s not happening. No time, and other things in the queue that I know you’ll be more into.

A peek of what’s been in my earbuds, on my nightstand, cued up on youtube, and one guilty pleasure Bravo On Demand find:

1. Bedouin’s Robot Heart Friday Sunrise Set from Burning Man 2015

I posted about this set on Instagram but I’ve listened to it at least 4 or 5 times in entirety so far. It taps into something so primal, so esoteric, so beautiful. I can’t even TELL YOU how excited I am to see Bedouin’s set at the Sx Festival in St. Martin in March. #itshappening

2. Serial Season 2 Podcast

I loved Season 1 so much, and I know everyone was eagerly awaiting Season 2. I will say it’s not AS gripping and Season 1 was for me, but it’s still so well-produced.

3. Between The World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

I’m about two thirds through this, and it’s a really quick and powerful read. As a sociologist I’m destined to be inherently drawn to questions and discussions around race, class, culture, social inclusion and exclusion, power, and the different lived experiences of reality people face.

4. Yogini Tarot

I’ve been watching Yogini Tarot’s YouTube channel for probably 6 months now, if not longer. And the most recent set of readings she did (for each of the 12 astrological signs) were REALLY powerful for me (must have been all the New Year energy swirling) and prompted me to book my first personal reading with her. The reading was great, exactly what I needed, and I’ll continue to book personal readings with Ann Marie every few months.

5. Workout New York

Ok, you didn’t think I’d get through a list without mentioning SOMETHING on Bravo, did you? I recently binge watched all the episodes Bravo has up of Work Out New York. As a little gym rat myself, this was SO entertaining. These people all have massive ish, too.

Music, Not Shopping!

november 27, 2015 | by: mercedes | filed under: musique du jour

Ok fine, some shopping. It’s Black Friday and I have a bunch of tabs open with carts filled to varying degrees – though will I actually pull the trigger on any of them? Aside from this strange online shopping behavior, I’ve been vibing to two *amazing* mixes this morning as I do lots of laundry/cleaning/palo-santo-ing my space. I’ve had these two mixes in my rotation for the last several weeks – each delivers something different, but I find myself getting lost in both. I can’t take credit for discovering them – my girl Kat let me know what’s up.

1. Black Coffee’s MixMag In Session mix (this looks to be about a year old): just getting into Black Coffee these days; he delivers a classic deep house sound with some tribal elements, and lots of soulful vocals. I see this sound working really well in a traditional nightclub setting, and seems versatile enough to appeal to house music neophytes as well as seasoned house heads:

2. Guy Mantzur’s A Guy In Ibiza #02: B2B With Guy J @ Alter Ego Sunset Secret Party Set (recorded September 20, 2015): SO into this sound, more minimal/tribal/exotic/esoteric/sacred dance music that seems more likely to appeal to real underground enthusiasts who frequent festivals in tropical locales and party for 24-48 hours straight (or more), versus dance music noobs. I’m obsessed with this set.
