SALT NEW YORK (Opening/Filling Palette/Swatching)

With the expected but no less disheartening continued takeover of “green” beauty by “clean” beauty (see latest ex.: Clarins acquires Ilia), I remain more committed than ever to discovering, testing, sharing and supporting independent/original/non-homogenized/inspiring beauty brands. A longtime L’Amour viewer and friend told me about Salt New York some months ago, and in need of some beauty inspiration I decided to put my first palette together.

Salt New York is makeup artist Kiki G’s line of *actually* innovative, sustainable, affordable, beautiful and most of all FUN refillable crème pans of makeup and luxe zippered palettes. Kiki has an amazing YouTube channel I highly recommend, and here are a couple of my favorite videos she’s done –

If you’re interested in seeing these crème tints in action, I did a first impression of the sneaky balm, contour, radiant crème tint (highlight) and lip + cheek tint (in Blackberry) on Patreon (live GRWM, available as an archive of 180+ live GRWMs), and last week I did a quick IG stories GRWM featuring the Coral lip + cheek tint (for anyone not on Instagram that footage is reposted to Patreon).

Some initial impressions are that these crème pans are most akin to Kjaer Weis – the slightly more sheer but no less pigmented version. I do not find them as comparable to RMS, which is a creamier, heavier, less long lasting take on cream products. There is a real artistry with Salt which is unique and so appealing (to me). Next up in my forays will be the artist adjusters for custom mixing; I already would like to kick back some of the vibrance of Blackberry just a bit. I don’t love that at least one of the formulas (the bronzers) have Tetra-C in them (Vit C) and when color crèmes are applied to lips I find there to be a slightly offputting metallic smell (I suspect due to the high iron oxide/pigment percentage these products are formulated with) but it subsides and isn’t a dealbreaker.

On my wishlist:
Large palette Sneaky Balm in N12 (for undereye brightening)
Several more of the Radiant Crèmes for wearing on the eyes (the gold and rust)
Lip + Cheek pan in Peach (similar but less vibrant than Coral) and Wine (hoping for an RMS Diabolique dupe)
Artist adjuster pans (undecided on which)
ANY LIMITED EDITION SHADES THAT ARE RELEASED
I’m gutted I didn’t know about Salt in time to pick up the Tangerine/Lilac LE duo from last year
